Becoming a Student - Examination

As a registered student member of the institute you are qualified to write examination and apply for exemption if necessary. The Capacity Building and Certification Division is in charge of conducting/administering the entire stages of the AICB examinations.

The examination is in three stages viz: Diploma, Intermediate Professional and Chartered Banker Levels. Successful completion of the three stages of the examination will lead to the award of the Certificate known as the Associateship of the AICB
 
Objectives of the Examination

One of the basic objectives of the Institute is promoting Banking Education in Africa through conducting banking examinations. The objective of promoting banking education is to amongst others:
1.    Uphold and ensure the observance of professional ethics and tradition in the banking and financial industry;
2.    Promote general advancement of banking practice in banks and their branches;
3.    Facilitate good rapport among bankers on matters of common interest;
4.    Keeping abreast of the latest developments in the banking industry;
5.    Promote and ensure the highest level of adherence to sound and generally accepted banking practices; and
6.    Uphold the integrity of the banking profession in order to instill public confidence in the banking system.

Mode of Registration

Special Instructions
•    Candidates for the examinations must have registered as student members before the intended Examinations.Membership registration numbers obtained will be used as the Examination Numbers.
•    Candidates must ensure that payments for Examinations are made into the Exam Portal only as any payment in error into other portals such as Exemption, Annual Subscription etc., will not be counted for exam purposes.
•    Application for changes of the Examination Center must be received by the Institute on or before the close of exam registration
•    Only candidates with dockets authenticated by a Fellow or Associate or Honorary Senior member of the Institute or Branch Managers of Bankers or Heads of Departments of Tertiary Institutions will be allowed into the Examination Halls
•    Any interested candidate can register for the Microfinance Certification Examinations
•    MCP candidates should download the Microfinance Certifocation Examination form from the Institute's Website.
•    Completed MCP Examination Forms and bank drafts for re-sit papers (where applicable) must be received on or before the examination.   

Student Member
The examination is in three stages viz: Diploma, Intermediate Professional and Chartered Banker Levels. Successful completion of the three stages of the examination will lead to the award of the Certificate known as the Associateship of AICB

Graduates can register as Student Members and prepare towards sitting for Professional in Banking Examination.

Qualification
A minimum of a first degree in any discipline, BSc. /HND or any approved professional qualifications for Professional (Student Members).

Ordinary Member
The Certificate in Banking Examination is in three stages viz: Certificate In Banking I, Certificate In Banking II and Certificate In Banking III. Successful completion of the three stages of the examination will lead to the award of the Certificate known as the Certificate in Banking (CIB) and the student will qualify as a Student Member and may write Professional Examination that will lead to the award of the Certificate in Associateship of the AICB Undergraduates can register as an Ordinary Members and prepare towards sitting for Certificate in Banking Examination.

New Diploma and Professional Examination

The New Syllabus Examination is in two stages viz: Diploma and Professional Examination. The Professional Examination consists of two levels: the Intermediate Professional level and the Chartered Banker Level. 

A transition period of one year (i.e. 2 examination diets) commencing from January 2014 will be allowed. In other words, the old Syllabus and the new Syllabus will run concurrently for one year (2014) i.e. both will be used for April 2014 and October 2014 Professional Examinations. The new syllabus will thereafter constitute the only basis for the Examination from April 2015 diet. Subjects hitherto passed in the Old Syllabus will be carried as passed in the New Syllabus.

Diploma Level 








Intermediate Professional Level

  • Holders of qualifications lower than an HND or University Degree will be required to obtain the Certificate in Banking qualification prior to being allowed to proceed for the ACIB qualification

 

  • First degree or Higher National Diploma, professional qualification or any equivalent qualification from recognized institutions

Linkage Route

  • Students of Banking and Finance in Tertiary institutions that are under the Linkage Programme of CIBN

Chartered Banker Level

  • Candidate must be a student of Banking and Finance in tertiary institution that is under the Linkage Programme of CIBN

Practitioners' Route

  • Experienced Bankers who have spent a minimum of 10 years in the industry
  • From the exemptions to be granted, candidates would write between 4 and 8 subjects depending on the extent of the relevance of their disciplines/ qualifications
  • Plus a Case Study

Intermediate Professional Level

  • 10 years relevant experience in the Banking & Finance Industry.
  • Must have attained a minimum of a Manager grade
  • Must have obtained academic/ professional qualifications such as
    • B.Sc/HND
    • ACA, ACIS, ACIPM and any other qualification as may be prescribed by the Governing Council from time to time

Programme available for a limited period of 5 years.

Chartered Banker/MBA Route

  • Provides a route to obtaining an MBA and Chartered Banker Status
  • Subject to the completion of the University/Business School Programme
  • Professional conditions prescribed

Chartered Banker Level

  • A good first degree in a relevant subject and at least three years relevant managerial experience
  • An approved professional qualification and at least three relevant managerial experience
  • Holders of recognized MBAs may qualify for the super accelerated programme

Certification Route

  • Candidates who take CIBN's Certification Programmes in specialized areas

Intermediate Professional Level & Chartered Bank Level

  • Successful completion of relevant Certification Programmes will qualify candidates for exemptions in flagship ACIB examinations
